Rising Up out of Misfortune & Poverty!
12 - Lessons for Living
Exodus 8:
20 And the Lord said to Moses,
"Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him,
'Thus says the Lord:
"Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
(NKJV)
From these instructions for Moses from God, we note five important practical lessons for our lives.
First, discipline. God instructed Moses to "Rise up early in the morning." If Moses is going to get his work done, he cannot lounge in bed till late in the morning. If he is going to get his work done, he needs some discipline. Discipline does not lie around in bed when you need to be up and busy.
Second, duty. God told Moses to “stand before Pharaoh.” It would be easier to stand before anyone else than Pharaoh. This reminds us that duty is not necessarily easy to do. You will not do well in doing your duty if you only do the things that are easy to do.
Third, diligence. God told Moses, "Stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water." In other words, Moses, do not delay. If you want to get your assignment done, get moving. Pharaoh is coming to the water, and you must not miss him. Diligence responds quickly to opportunity. Some complain they are not getting the breaks in life when their problem is actually a lack of diligence.
Fourth, declaration. God told Moses to tell Pharaoh, "And the Lord said to Moses." That is the right message. We have been telling and listening to messages that have come from everyone but God. We let Hollywood tell us about morals. We let politicians tell us about abortion, and we let businesses tell us about covetousness. It is time we listened instead to God to learn what He is saying about these things.
Fifth, devotion. God told Moses to tell Pharaoh, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me." The reason for the deliverance of Israel from Egypt was so the Israelites could serve God. When you are sick, do you pray to get well so you can be in church and serve God better? When you are poor, do you pray for more money so you can give more to God? Mostly we pray for selfish reasons. But our text gives us a better reason. - Butler's Daily Bible Reading Sermonettes
